Sherburne reservoir is approximately 6.5 km (4 miles) south and 3 km (2 miles) west of the town of Grassy Lake. This reservoir is approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) long and runs from east to west. There is a rip rap dam at the east end of this water body. The maximum water depth is around 17 meters (55 feet). Sherburne is an off stream storage reservoir within the St. Mary River Irrigation District. Sherburne is down stream from Chin reservoir on the St Mary main canal.  The main canal does not flow directly into or through Sherburne.  A structure located on the main canal diverts water from the main canal into smaller canal and this smaller canal feeds Sherburne. The canal inlet to Sherburne is on the south shore about 2/3 of the way towards the west end of the reservoir. The outlet is at the north end of the dam. The only concrete boat launch is located on the north shore about 1 km (3/4 mile) west of the dam. Some anglers launch their boats on the south shore at the canal inlet as well as the southeast corner of the dam.  Random camping around the boat launch is allowed. Camping is very rustic with no designated sites, toilets, picnic tables or camp kitchens. There is no camping fee at this time but keep in mind that the land around the boat launch is privately owned so please use respect and do what you can to keep the area clean.

Fishing

Walleye, perch, pike, ling and white fish can be found in this water body. The Walleye bite can be slow first thing in the spring so slow down your presentation if your not getting to many bites. As water temp rises bouncers with spinner rigs and spin and glows work well and don't be afraid to tie on a crank bait as well. The perch in sherburne have been know to rob anglers of every last leech and crawler they have, so bring plenty of bait. There are plenty of points that hold fish on both the North and South shores. Many anglers fish from the dam as well.
The Walleye fishery on Sherburne reservoir is in the "Vulnerable" category. Anglers are not allowed to keep fish under 50 cm and are limited to 3 fish/day over 50 cm.

Reservoir History and Data

Sherburne as it is called on most maps has also been called Grassy reservoir by many anglers. The St Mary Irrigation District refers to this water body as Grassy reservoir as well. In the past there has been some discussion on the official name of this water body. Its "map name" is consistently called Sherburne but many anglers simply call it Grassy.
